Genius HQ - A Night of Legend Event
So as you guys may know by now, I love freebies! NY has tons of free events that surprisingly not too many people know about. I, myself started taking advantage of these freebies this past year starting with advanced movie screenings and slowly moving up the big dog ladder to weekly events. I can’t say I did it all on my own though, my co-worker put me on to the wave and still does point things out to me from time to time.
This Genius HQ event was recommended to me by a college friend and featured rapper Wale. Wale is someone I got hip to when I attended VSU (Virginia State University) and I know a couple of his songs so I was down (plus they had free cocktails lol). So a couple of my friends got together and we headed down to Red Hook for this show.
Being that this was a concert, two of my friends and I headed there a little after work, turns out we were the first people there so we walked around a bit to waste time. When we finally got back they put a rope out so we got in line first. Finally after waiting a while and being searched by security we made our way in. Inside was an amazing setup, although freezing, and my group headed straight for the bar for some free drinks sponsored by 1800 Tequila (always have to secure the drinks lol). Afterwards we made our way to this door marked prizes where they were giving everyone a free T-shirt and poster and there was a photo booth. Anybody who knows me knows I have a photo booth obsession right now, anytime I see one I have to hop in. After taking some interactive photos we headed back out to the main area.
There was a DJ spinning, a step and repeat to take more photos in front of and great vibes. All of this made up for the long wait that we had. I could actually leave at that point and feel accomplished, but I came to see Wale and that’s what I was going to do. Wale eventually came down maybe an hour before the event was supposed to end to give an intimate performance. Wale came down to the stage lit and ready lol, he performed about 5-6 songs, 1 of which was new. I would say the one disappointment I had was that the whole performance I felt he avoided the corner where my friends and I were but that’s fine. After his set was done there was nothing left to see so my friends and I headed home. All in all it was a good night and I had a good time. To see some photos and video of the night, peep below!
